The Segun Awolowo I Knew
A Tribute to Segun Awolowo
The news of Mr. Segun Awolowo's passing on November 20, 2025, came as a shock to many, including those who had the privilege of working with him. As his immediate successor as Executive Director/CEO of the Nigerian Export Promotion Council (NEPC), Dr. Ezra Yakusak had a unique perspective on the man behind the title. His reflections offer an intimate look into the character of Segun Awolowo—not just as a leader, but as a person.
A Challenging Beginning
Dr. Yakusak's first encounter with Segun Awolowo in November 2013 was anything but smooth. When he visited Awolowo’s office to introduce himself as the Legal Adviser of NEPC, he noticed an immediate tension. The CEO’s response was not warm or welcoming. Based on his experience in public service, Yakusak suspected that negative rumors about him had reached Awolowo. Despite this, he chose to keep his distance, believing that his work would eventually speak for itself.
The relationship grew more strained when Yakusak took a firm stance on a particular project. He explained his position clearly, emphasizing the need to protect both the system and Awolowo from potential misdirection. To his surprise, Awolowo listened and ultimately agreed with his reasoning. This moment marked a turning point in their professional dynamic.
A Shift in Perception
Two years later, a wave of petitions against Awolowo emerged from disgruntled staff members who had failed the 2015 promotion exams. These petitions were filled with half-truths and misinformation. Interestingly, one of the central issues raised was the same one Yakusak had previously taken a strong stand on. Awolowo, upon learning of the petition, called Yakusak into his office and gave him a heartfelt embrace. He thanked him for standing by his principles, even when it was difficult. This gesture symbolized the beginning of a stronger, more trusting relationship between the two leaders.
Awolowo later shared that he had been advised to reassign Yakusak far from the headquarters. However, he chose to trust his instincts and the integrity of his colleague. This decision proved to be a pivotal moment in their collaboration.
The Influence of Family and Values
Segun Awolowo’s personality was deeply shaped by his grandfather, Chief Obafemi Awolowo. He often spoke about how his grandfather insisted on his education in Nigeria, a decision that he believed brought him closer to his wife. This influence is evident in Awolowo’s approach to leadership—open-minded, inclusive, and free from tribal or religious biases.
Throughout their time working together, none of Awolowo’s personal staff were from his ethnic group. This reflected his commitment to fairness and equality. He treated everyone with respect, regardless of background or affiliation.
A Humble and Jovial Nature
One of the most endearing qualities of Segun Awolowo was his amiable and humorous spirit. Yakusak recalls how Awolowo would often joke around during serious discussions, sometimes saying things like, “Ah Ezra, leave me alone oh, na only me my Mama get.” His laughter was infectious, often filling the room with warmth and light.
Despite his professional rigor, Awolowo had a soft side that few saw. During the launch of Yakusak’s daughter’s book, After They Left, Awolowo read it during the Christmas break. Upon returning, he jokingly complained that the book had ruined his holiday. But when Yakusak asked why, Awolowo revealed that he had cried while reading it. The story resonated with him deeply, touching on themes that struck a personal chord.
Emotional Depth and Compassion
As CEO of NEPC, Awolowo was often perceived as strict and uncompromising. Yet, those who knew him well understood his emotional depth. After his tenure ended, Yakusak and other staff visited him in Abuja. Awolowo was overwhelmed by their presence, unable to hold back his tears. His gratitude and affection were genuine and heartfelt.
Awolowo was also known for his generosity and compassion. Even small gestures were met with immense appreciation. He once sent Yakusak a photo with a government official, captioned, “See how your suit fits. Thank you my brother.” He also gifted Yakusak various items from his travels abroad and even covered medical expenses for a surgery Yakusak underwent in 2020.
A Final Act of Kindness
On October 15, 2025, Awolowo, already gravely ill, called Yakusak to express concern over his son’s illness. In a voice that was weak but full of care, Awolowo offered to help with medical bills. Though Yakusak declined, the gesture left him deeply moved. It was a final act of kindness from a man who, despite his own suffering, still thought of others.
That conversation turned out to be their last. Two weeks later, both Yakusak’s son and Awolowo passed away within the same month. Their deaths left a profound impact on Yakusak, erasing any remaining pride or arrogance he may have carried.
A Lasting Legacy
Segun Awolowo’s life was a testament to integrity, compassion, and leadership. His legacy lives on through those he touched, including Dr. Ezra Yakusak. As a boss, a predecessor, and a friend, Awolowo will be remembered not just for his achievements, but for the humanity he brought to every interaction. May his soul rest in perfect peace.
