Shyllon Calls for Private and Corporate Investment in Visual Arts

A Call to Action for Nigeria’s Visual Arts Sector
Prince (Dr.) Yemisi Shyllon, a prominent philanthropist and the leading art collector in Africa, has urged private individuals and corporate organizations to increase their investments in Nigeria's visual arts sector. His call came shortly after delivering a distinguished lecture and receiving an award of excellence organized by Obafemi Awolowo University in his honor. The university recognized his significant contributions to the institution and its development.
Dr. Shyllon emphasized that the involvement of private stakeholders could unlock the full potential of the visual arts industry. He drew a parallel between the growth of Nollywood, Nigeria's film industry, which rose to global prominence due to private and corporate support, and the current state of the visual arts sector. He argued that a similar approach could lead to transformative changes, encouraging stronger government participation as well.
He highlighted the importance of the visual arts industry as a powerful tool for national development. Dr. Shyllon stressed the need for all stakeholders to play their part in securing the future of this sector. He recalled how Nollywood started with limited resources but grew significantly due to the contributions of private individuals and corporations. Today, it stands as a symbol of Nigeria's cultural and economic influence on the global stage.
Dr. Shyllon also discussed the historical challenges faced by the visual arts in Nigeria. He pointed out that religious interpretations have often influenced public perception of art. For example, he referenced Exodus 20:4, where the commandment against making images was taken literally by some religious groups. However, he noted that many overlooked subsequent verses that clarified the context, allowing for artistic expression without worshiping the works themselves. Similarly, he mentioned Quranic references that permitted artistic creation as long as it was not worshipped.
Despite these initial challenges, Dr. Shyllon observed a growing appreciation for the role of art in cultural development, tourism, and employment. He pointed out that Nigeria now has numerous art institutions, and artists are increasingly showcasing the country's culture and creativity. This trend indicates a positive outlook for the future of the visual arts sector.
In his welcome message, the Vice Chancellor of Obafemi Awolowo University, Prof. Simone Bamire, commended Prince Yemisi Adedoyin Shyllon for his contributions to the institution. He reiterated the university's commitment to promoting innovation in the creative industries. Prof. Bamire expressed hope that the day's events would inspire new ideas, strengthen collaborations, and renew the collective commitment to artistic excellence and cultural preservation.
He praised the theme of the lecture, "Meaningful Living," which aims to challenge, inspire, and reawaken a sense of purpose among individuals and the community. He highlighted the significance of the event, given that it was delivered by an iconic figure whose life's work embodies creativity, philanthropy, cultural preservation, and global artistic excellence.
Prof. Bamire emphasized that the soul of any civilization is reflected in its art—its music, literature, visual splendor, and performances. He connected this philosophy to the academic values of Obafemi Awolowo University, which emphasizes learning and culture.
He described Prince Shyllon as a figure who resonates across continents. As Africa's foremost art collector, he is also a creative mind, a committed philanthropist, and a relentless advocate for cultural advancement. Through the Omooba Yemisi Adedoyin Shyllon Art Foundation (OYASAF), established in 2007, and various global initiatives, he has promoted art and cultural projects, elevating Nigerian and African art to international recognition.
His efforts have supported young creatives, strengthened institutions, and projected Nigeria's cultural identity with dignity. His passion for nurturing creativity and expanding artistic knowledge continues to inspire generations.
Prof. Bamire concluded by expressing pride in hosting such a distinguished speaker and benefactor. He emphasized the importance of art in shaping identity, inspiring reflection, and advancing society. Whether through sculpture, painting, architecture, or design, art remains a vital force for cultural and social progress.
